The school’s Governing Body has three core functions:

 To ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

 To hold school leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and for the performance management of staff; and

 To oversee the financial performance of the school and to make sure its money is well spent.

We regularly review the effectiveness of our work to ensure that governors have the right mix of skills, experience and capacity. We have recently carried out an audit of our practice and structures and agreed an action plan that is helping us to increase the positive impact we have on the work of the school.

The full Governing Body normally meets five times during the year and the main Committees meet once a term. Governors regularly visit when the school is in session, observing the day to day work of the school and talking to the children.

Much has been achieved during 2018 and there has been a significant improvement in both the progress and the standards achieved by the children across both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. We believe that the school is now well placed to build on this success and to continue raising the outcomes for all our children.

(Chair of Governors)

Who’s Who

Martin Collins

I am a Parent Governor and member of the Resources Committee of which I am Vice-Chair. Within this Committee we oversee the school’s premises and finances and as an engineer I am able look at the premises issues from a technical and financial point of view. I am also the named governor for Health and Safety. Working in industry I bring technical knowledge and best practices to the Governing Body and I have experience in managing projects and budgets.

Margaret Dean

I have been living in Alderbury for seven years, having spent the previous 35 years in Salisbury. I became a Foundation Governor at AWGS in 2014, having links with St Mary’s and Salisbury Methodist Church. I am a member of the Teaching, Learning and Assessment and the Personnel Committees. I am now retired but worked for many years as an Infants teacher. I am the link governor for the teaching of a foreign language and for the Early Years Foundation Stage. I help in the Early Years classroom regularly and spend considerable time at the school supporting events and carrying out my governor’s role. Technology has advanced since I left teaching and teaching strategies have changed but I believe the basic needs of children to be nurtured, respected, encouraged and challenged remain the same.

Kate Fergusson

As a parent of two children who attended AWGS and as a former teacher and SENCO at the school, I have a true passion that all pupils should be given the opportunity to be happy, secure and achieve their potential. I am a Foundation Governor and the named governor for SEND and PPG. I also chair the Personnel Committee. I work as a Head of Learning Support in a Salisbury school (EYFS – Y11) and hold specialist qualifications in assessments and diagnoses of Specific Learning Difficulties.

John Fuller

I am a Foundation Governor and Chair of the Governing Body. I chair the Resources Committee and also attend the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee and the Personnel Committee. I meet weekly with Mr Thorpe to discuss the work of the School and I am also the link governor for maths. I have spent my career working in the world of education, including twenty years as a Headteacher. I have worked as a School Improvement Partner and most recently I have held senior roles within a large Multi Academy Trust. I am a member of Alderbury Parish Council and a church warden at St. Mary’s Alderbury. I believe strongly in the importance of the School to the life of our villages and I am committed to ensuring the very best outcomes for all of the children of Alderbury and West Grimstead School.

Beth Hutton

I am the vicar of Alderbury and West Grimstead (and other neighbouring villages). I have been a Governor at AWGS since June 2016 and have previous experience as a Governor at a school in Trowbridge. By the nature of my job, I have a direct input into collective worship, and work with Foundation Governors to monitor worship and identify the impact of the ethos of the school. I am currently link governor for R.E. I am also link governor for Music, one of my great passions. Having been privileged to learn a number of instruments as a child, I long to see all pupils pick up an instrument, whether it is bowed, blown or beaten!

Ruth Jennison

I am a Parent Governor and a member of the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee. As a teacher with over 15 years of experience in local primary schools, I believe I have the expertise to support our school’s journey to becoming even more successful. I am committed to the village community and have co-led Alderbury Toddler Group for several years. Through my teaching roles over the years, I have developed a good understanding of how to achieve a balance between raising academic standards and providing a broad, rich and varied curriculum that excites and inspires all of our children, whatever their needs and talents. I have always been interested in children, education and parenting, and feel I offer a valuable mix of skills from my professional and personal backgrounds.

Adam Jolliffe

I have been a resident in Alderbury for the last three years, having lived in Salisbury prior to that. I am a Parent Governor and serve on the Resources committee with link governor status for P.E. I am a hands-on governor and have an active role in extra-curricular activities, running the Gardening Club and taking responsibility for various outdoor areas. Outside of school life I work in the water industry, which gives me a different perspective and often allows me to see things in a practical way.  For example, this year I involved twenty children in the Annual Village Gardening Show, which created an opportunity to engage with the wider village community and forge links with the elderly and young alike.

Kitty Love

I am a Foundation Governor and a member of the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee. I am a parent of two children who attended AWGS and an experienced teacher.

Lindy Paramor

I am a Foundation Governor for West Grimstead where I have lived for most of my life. My sons attended the old West Grimstead School and I was a governor there in the years leading up to the opening of the new Alderbury and West Grimstead School in 1993. So, it is a real pleasure to be involved here again. My working life has been in education, firstly in pre-school education and then as an Open University lecturer in social science, both of which support my role as the link governor for Literacy and my membership of the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee. I am committed to the school’s emphasis on the values of friendship, thanksgiving and service as providing the ethos in which every child can flourish.

Nicola Sloan

I am a Foundation Governor and Vice-Chair of the Governing Body and chair the Teaching and Learning Committee. I am also the named governor for Safeguarding and Whistleblowing. Over the last thirty years I have worked with children of all ages in a church setting and as a teacher of English at secondary school level. I began training as a Counsellor at work to support my role in pastoral care and have, therefore, a particular interest in children’s emotional wellbeing. With this in mind, I am a strong supporter of the extracurricular activities offered by Alderbury and West Grimstead School as well as maintaining a keen, experienced based focus, on classroom learning. I am fully committed to the school and its ethos and look forward to supporting Mr Thorpe and his staff as they continue to equip and enable each child to reach their highest potential.
